This exhibit brings together the work of 15 notable cartoonists– Clarence Daniel Batchelor, Herbert Lawerence Block, Gerald William Costello, Edmund Duffy, Jules Feiffer, Giovanni Fischetti, Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick, Walter Crawford Kelly, Reginald Manning, Edwin Marcus, William Henry Mauldin, Robert Chesley Osborn, Cloyd Sweigert, Charles Geroge Werner, and Art Wood– whom represent a spectrum of political opinion during the Cold War era. The cartoons address a variety of topics including the early Cold War issues, events, themes, and leaders. These cartoons have been preserved in the Prints and Photographs Division under the Library of Congress; who has had a longstanding commitment to preserving diversity of opinion reflected in the American creative achievement. This exhibit focuses on early Cold War (1946-1960) as by 1960, the Cold War had entered a new phase and by then, virtually all events which Americans associate with the Cold War– the arms race, Soviet and Chinese military aggression, and McCarthyism– had already emerged.
